REPLACEMENT HOUSING VOLUNTARY DEMOLITION PROGRAM & COUNSELING SERVICES
It is not unusual to find homes that are beyond repair (i.e., structurally unsound foundation), and in violation of environmental codes (i.e., accumulation of debris, junk cars, etc.). The City offers a Voluntary Demolition Program that, with the owner's permission, allows for City staff and equipment to clear the property. Typically used to demolish old, abandoned structures, it is also available to reduce the cost of replacement housing.
The new home is then built on the same lot through either Self-Help (if the family can afford the minimum payment) or through State funded "extensive rehabilitation." Every effort is made to preserve architectural features/neighborhood identity. Homeownership counseling is mandatory to all housing program participants.
